Blanchard's Kenya Yara AA

Image
Blanchard's is killing the coffee game! This is the third coffee I've reviewed from them, and they've all been top notch. Blanchard's calls Richmond, Virginia home.     Today's coffee is their Kenya Yara. The coffee was wet pulped, naturally fermented, then sun dried on raised beds. This combination of unique processing methods makes for an intense, complex cup. I brewed this at a 1:8 ratio. Blanchard's notes flavors of nectarine honey, plum, & gingersnap. I noted a very bright, sweet citrus coffee. Super juicy & tart. Cranberry. Lime. Spice. Amazing coffee!    Thanks again to Stephen & Blanchard's for the amazing coffees.  Go check these guys out, they do amazing things:   blanchardscoffee.com

Amateur The Collector

Image
Tonight's coffee comes to us from Amateur Coffee. Amateur is a husband & wife combo based out of Omaha, Nebraska. Jacob roasts while Jasmyn makes everything pretty. They roast their coffees with love & intention to showcase their individual characteristics.     First off, their packing is very nice. I love the labels on each. This coffee is their 'The Collector'. It's a washed bean from Guatemala. Cultivated by the Dinamica Farmers Cooperative. I brewed this at a 1:12 ratio. They noted tastes of butterscotch tobacco when hot & dark chocolate covered cherry sweetness as it cools. As I cold brewed this, it was never hot, but I definitely still noted tobacco. In aroma and taste. Little brown sugar, nutty. Noticed a slight chocolate flavor. Not too sweet though. This is one of the few coffees I've brewed that might be better as a pour over. Still an enjoyable cold brew though.     Thanks again to Jacob & Jasmyn for the coffee. Excited to

Cafe Devocion Geisha

Image
Today's cup is my last Geisha from my Angel's Black Box. Sipping from my awesome Second Best enamel campfire mug I bought from them a while back when I lived right down the street from them. Great shop. Kansas City, especially Waldo/Brookside people, should check them out.     The final Geisha comes from Cafe Devocion. A washed Colombian bean from Acevedo, Luis Calderon. Brewed at 1:8, same as all the others. This Geisha was amazing; same as the other three. So fragrant; delicate, floral. So soft and sweet. I loved this Geisha box. Will definitely keep my eyes open for another one. Links for coffee goods:    devocion.com     angelscup.com     secondbestcoffee.com

Blueprint La Montana

Image
Today's coffee is brought to us by the fine folks from Blueprint Coffee. Blueprint is doing great things based out of St. Louis, MO.  This is the second coffee I'm reviewing from them.    This is their La Montaña. A washed Honduras bean from the Las Capucas region. This is their first offering from Honduras, but has been a result of many years of work building infrastructure and quality assurance. This microlot from farmer Marlon Peraza was one of the winning lots from the 2016 harvest. This was a tasty coffee. Medium body. Sweet chocolate. Sweet, little tart fruit. Blueprint says they taste tootsie roll, red apple, papaya.    Thanks again to Mike & Blueprint for the coffees & growler. Go check these guys out & get some great coffee:   blueprintcoffee.com

Reverie Roasters Guatemala Rio Ocho

Image
Today's coffee is my third, and final (sad face), coffee from Reverie Roasters. Reverie is doing great things down in Wichita, KS. Loved all the coffees Jason sent down to me.     Today's coffee is a washed Guatemala. It's a single origin coffee cultivated in the mountains of Huehuetenango. This was a very balanced cup. Somewhat middle of the road to what I usually brew, but that was nice for a change. Not a super bright or super fruity coffee I typically brew. I did brew this at 1:12, so next time I think I will go down to a 1:8 ratio to see how much older I can make it. This was a nice smooth milk chocolatey, sweet nutty drink. Would mix well with a shot of cream as well (after I brew stronger).     Another solid coffee from Reverie. Thanks again, Jason & crew.  Go check them out and buy some amazing coffee:   reverieroasters.com

Methodical El Salvador, Apaneca

Image
Today's coffee is brought to us by Methodical Coffee out of Greenville, SC. Both coffees that Will sent out to me have been great.     This is an El Salvador bean, from the Apaneca region. This is the 2nd bean from El Salvador I have reviewed, and I have liked them both very much. Which is one of the reasons I started this project, to expand on my bean/roast/processing knowledge. This bean was very different from the other El Salvador I brewed. This was very much like the tasting notes Methodical writes; berry, chocolate. A fairly sweet, creamy coffee. Blueberries, strawberries. Very nice. I brewed this at 1:12. Will go stronger next time, possibly to my 1:8 ratio, see how much more chocolate or berry I can get out of it. This would also be nice with a splash of cream.     Thanks again to Will for setting me up with these coffees. These guys are doing good things. Go check them out & buy some amazing beans:   methodicalcoffee.com

Blue Monarch Ethiopia - Goma Woreda

Image
Love to see local people doing great things. Today's coffee is from a new kid on the block, and they're hanging tough! (Terrible, I know, but I'm an 80's kid). Blue Monarch is based out of KCMO, by a 'couple pretty simple dudes' trying to get unique roasted coffee into the hands of normal coffee drinkers. But after this bag of beans, the coffee aficionados will appreciate this stuff as well.     This bean is an Ethiopian from the Goma Woreda region. I believe this to be a washed Ethiopian as opposed to a natural. I brewed this at a 1:8 ratio. This coffee is amazing. I love Ethiopians too, though. But this isn't the same as those naturals that I love so much. It's not as full bodied or citrusy as most naturals, but still carries that sweet fruity flavor. I tasted a very floral, sweet citrus coffee. Berries, grapefruit, with a scent of cocoa. Sweet through and through. Tyler mentioned to me when he gave me this bag, it was the highest scored

La Colombe Washed Panama - Hacienda la Esmeralda Geisha

Image
Tonight I'm enjoying this liquid candy from La Colombe Coffee. This is a sampler I got when I bought my Angel's Cup Black Geisha Box. This is La Colombe's Washed Panama - Hacienda la Esmeralda Geisha. Wow! This coffee is legit!    Given they say this coffee should be considered the archetype Geisha, I can see why this bean is so highly sought after. This farm is credited with the of the Geisha bean.  This coffee is so sweet and floral, it's hard to believe it's coffee and not a tea. I brewed this at a 1:8 ratio and it's magnificent. Lime, orange, floral, honeysuckle. Amazing! Angel's Cup also notes blue pixie stick and vanilla.     Even though Geisha's will never be a mainstay in my coffee collection, I'm really glad I bought this sampler box.  And thanks to Tyler & Blue Monarch for the mug. New KC roaster doing great things; excited to review their coffee this week.  Go check out Angel's Cup:   angelscup.com And La

Blanchard's El Salvador La Concordia

Image
Today's coffee is brought to us by the fine folks over at Blanchard's Coffee Roasting. Blanchard's is based out of Richmond, Virginia.     This is an El Salvador La Concordia. Honey Natural Process. I brewed this at a 1:12 ratio. This is a coffee very reminiscent of the first type of cold brew I ever had. Very peach iced tea-like. Sweet citrusy. This could be an all-summer drinker for sure. Delicious! Blanchard's also notes tastes of pear, lemongrass, sweet tangerine. They also mention it makes a great espresso with it's orange creamsicle & milk chocolate notes.     Thanks again to Stephen for the beans. These guys have had some top-notch beans so far. One more bean to review from them.  Go check them out and order some coffee at:   blanchardscoffee.com

Reverie Roasters Sumatra, Ulos Batak

Image
Today we have another amazing coffee from Reverie Roasters from Wichita, KS. Glad Jason responded to my request because otherwise I probably wouldn't have come across these guys. I'm loving their coffees they sent me.    Today's selection is their Sumatra, Ulos Batak. This coffee is 'Autumn-In-A-Cup'. Reverie notes maple, allspice, full. I concur. I tasted a very full bodied coffee. Sweet, woodsy, bourbon deliciousness. Perfect to enjoy with some pumpkin or pecan pie. I bet this would make an amazing espresso. I brewed this at a 1:12 ratio, but I think I'll go to 1:8 next time to see how 'deep' I can make the brew. Bet this is another coffee also enjoyed with a splash of cream.    Thanks again to Jason for the amazing coffees they sent to me. Excited for the next bean from these guys. Go check them out & buy some coffee at:   reverieroasters.com

Messenger Kenya Gituja AB

Image
Sorry for the long absence, took a little vacation to Colorado! I'm back, and with an excellent coffee. This is my 2nd from Messenger Coffee Co. Thanks again to Isaac for these wonderful beans.     This is a washed Kenya Gituja AB. Very interesting cup; my 1st Kenyan, I believe. I brewed this at a 1:14 ratio. Messenger notes fresh cut cedar, tangerine. Body of a juicy red wine. Lingering cranberry acidity. I'm definitely getting the woodsy citrusy aromas and tastes. Very grapefruity to me. Can definitely taste the fruity wine-like acidity. This was definitely different than the fruity sweet naturals I typically brew, and it was well received! Next time I brew, I will probably reduce the ratio a bit to see if the citrus pops out even more. I feel this worked great as a cold brew.     Thanks again Messenger & Isaac for these delicious coffees. Love to see KC coffee doing great things! Blanchard's Nicaragua Finca San Jose De Las Nubes

Image
Today's coffee comes from Blanchard's Coffee out of Richmond, Virginia. Blanchard's has been a certified organic craft coffee roaster since 2005. I can say that experience pays off dividends because the 4 coffees that Stephen sent out to me are amazing. Thanks again sir!    This first coffee I'm reviewing is their Nicaragua Finca San Jose De Las Nubes. That's a mouthful. It's a fully washed bean from Matagalpa, Nicaragua. This was a great cup of coffee. Brewed this at a 1:12 ratio. This coffee definitely had an floral sweetness to it. Also a great chocolatey/nutty taste along with sweet citrus. A smooth cup of coffee. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I would like to brew this again, stronger perhaps, and with a touch of cream.    Thanks again to Stephen for the beans. Excited to see what the other 3 beans bring! Go check them out and order some coffee at :   blanchardscoffee.com

Blueprint Cajamarca Select

Image
Today's coffee is brought to us by Blueprint Coffee. Blueprint is doing some great things out in St. Louis. Thanks to Mike for these beans and that awesome growler.    This bean is a washed bean from Peru. A blended varietal from the Cajamarca Region. This is their Cajamarca Select. Pretty sure this is the first Peruvian I have cold brewed. I brewed this at a 1:14 ratio. This was a nice brew for my first Peruvian. It was a very smooth cup. Milk chocolate, nutty, sweet cherry, light citrus. Very nice. Drank this 'black', but I bet would be nice with some milk to go with the chocolate/nut flavors.    Thanks again to Mike & Blueprint for the hookup. Go check them out and order some coffee at :   blueprintcoffee.com

Lift Natural Los Congos

Image
Tonight's coffee was brought to you by Lift Coffee Roasters. Many thanks to Beau for the hookup. Lift is based out of Riverside, CA. And per their website, their coffee is roasted with a simple philosophy: roast should not stand in the way of the coffee but should bring out the coffees’ terroir and the farmers' intentions. And I must say, this coffee is amazing!    I am having some good fortunes shining my way, because lately I have been brewing some amazing coffee; and this one is amazing. This is a Natural Los Congos, from Nueva Segovia Nicaragua. I believe this is my 1st time brewing a Nicaraguan bean. I brewed this at a 1:12 ratio. The tasting notes on the bag say 'fermented fruit - red wine'. I definitely taste that. Sweet citrus bomb! Sour cherry. Nutty/chocolate sweetness. Super bright complex cup. Beau, the head roaster, said this was one of his favorites, and I can definitely see why. This will definitely be put on my list of coffees to look for

Methodical Ethiopian, Guji

Image
Tonight's coffee is a beautiful bag from Methodical Coffee. Many thanks to their roaster Will for the hookup. This is one of 2 coffees he sent me.    First off, I love this packaging. Such a beautiful floral design. Methodical is based out of South Carolina. They opened in 2015 with pennies in the bank, and a line out the door. And that line stayed there til they closed. I can understand why.    This coffee is pretty yummy. The coffee I brewed tonight is their Ethiopian, Guji. This is a washed bean from the "Hambela" farm. Even though this isn't a Natural, this is still a very bright and fruity and sweet cup. I got sweet citrus, honeysuckle, floral. This was an amazing coffee. Thanks again Will & Methodical. Excited to see what the other bag is like.  Go check them out and order some coffee at :   methodicalcoffee.com Like

Signet Organic Mission Blend

Image
Today's coffee was supplied to me by Signet Coffee Roasters. Many thanks to Laura for sending me these beans. Signet is based out of Pittsburg, KS; about 2.5 hours south of Kansas City. Per their website, signet means "the impression made by”, as they hope that their coffee will make a large impression on their community and customers. I love the recent resurgence in the pride people take in their communities. The whole 'buy local' is a great concept in my opinion. I do this myself, both at home and on the road.     The bean I was supplied is their Organic Mission Blend. I wasn't able to find out exactly what their mix is, but I was told the majority of it is their Organic Yirgacheffe Ethiopian. This is a darker roast than I usually brew, so I brewed it a little 'lighter' than normal; 1:12. Whatever the other bean(s) are they use in this blend, it works! Right away it's much different than the sweet fruity coffees I am used to brewing. And
