Swings Decaf Colombia



   Here I present my third and final bean from Swings Coffee. Swing’s Coffee Roasters has been part of the Washington, DC coffee culture for nearly 100 years. The M.E. Swing Co. was established in Washington, D.C. by M.E. Swing and his son, Edward Swing, in 1916. Father and son found a ready market for the premium Arabica beans which were imported from Africa, Latin America, and the Far East. In 1920, the company opened its now historic Mesco Coffee Roasters building at 1013 E Street. Swing’s passionate customers have literally traveled the world with their beans in tow, sharing their coffee with others, and relating tales of “this obscure coffee roaster in DC.” That level of devotion has kept the roasters running all this time. In 2013, Swing’s opened a new roastery and coffee bar with the sole intent of delivering exceptional coffees and a unique coffee experience to their following. They hope to strengthen an existing bond and extend their reach to those who have yet to discover what they are all about. They roast ethically-sourced coffees behind a glass wall of the Del Ray coffee bar – their transparency applies to both sourcing and roasting. Swings is eager to share their craft and coffee discoveries with those wanting to learn more about the art of coffee. 

   This is their Decaf Colombia bean. The decaffeination plant uses a patented method of extracting ethanol from sugar cane, which grows in abundance in the area. This method is 100% chemical free, leaving you only the true flavor of the coffee: big milk chocolate notes with cane sugar and light citrus. I brewed this at my 1:12 ratio. Whereas I wouldn't normally buy a decaf bean, this made for a tasty cold brew. Bright and citrusy and fruity. Very sweet chocolate.

Tony’s Chocolonely Milk Chocolate

   I know I haven't done any chocolate bars for you guys in quite some time, but they don't come through my mailbox as often as the coffee (bummer, I know). But recently I reached out to Tony's (after seeing them in my local World Market store) and they have been kind enough to supply me with some of their bars for me to share with everyone.    In 2005 Dutch investigative reporter Teun (Tony) van de Keuken launched an investigation about the use of slavery within the cocoa industry on his consumer report show Keuringsdienst van Waarde. He was literally shocked to discover that most of the chocolate on supermarket shelves was harvested by slaves—worse, by child slaves. He decided to do something about it. On November 29th 2005, Teun decided to lead by example and make 5,000 Fairtrade chocolate bars. Tony’s Chocolonely was born.
